Aspen World Cup 2012

While training this past weekend in Aspen, the Powderhorn Racing Club kids got the added bonus of watching the Women's WC GS and SL. This is Jed Wilson 13, chatting it up with Mikaela Shiffrin 16, who placed 8th in Sunday's Slalom, one of US Skiing's youngest top ten finishes at a World Cup. Julie Mancuso had a podium finish in Saturday's GS placing 3rd. Thank you to Ron Wilson for the great pictures!

As we've said, our focus this year is to provide a new level of customer service by enhancing the overall guest experience. We are investing $800,000 in the resort this year as part of a multi-year capital improvement program. So what have we done so far?

There's No Business Like Snow Business

Snow is on the way and we are rolling out the welcome mat! It's a short yet strong system with a lower snow line, so we could see the white stuff on the whole mountain. Preparations are at full speed and this snow will only encourage us to keep sprinting!

We've added some great new people to the management team. They're drinking from the fire hose this week as they jump right in. Everyone on the team are skiers/riders who cannot wait to get on the mountain. I can't think of better motivation at work: the better you do, the better the ski rewards. There really is no business like the snow business.

We love the "preseason." It's a ton of work but it's all with great anticipation for opening day. This year, we're busier than ever. With the transition to new owners comes a lot of exciting changes and we're hustling to implement as much as possible before your skis touch the snow.

If you peek at our webcam, you'll notice the deck is getting completely resurfaced. And you're going to notice some big changes when you walk into the lodge the first time!

First of all, thank you to everyone who came up, took a lift ride and enjoyed the fall colors!

As I type this post, it's raining buckets. We like to say that rain is just premature snow. And it is in fact forecast to snow tonight in some areas around 10,000 feet. The first time those forecasters start saying the GOOD 4-letter word, well we just get excited.

Who knows what the winter weather will bring, but take a look at what the Farmer's Almanac is saying. Well we say it's never too early to start your snow dances. Let's make sure this doesn't happen!

Half Pipe Coming to Powderhorn for Winter Season

MESA, Colo. (Sept. 30, 2011) – Big news for ski and snowboard enthusiasts and families, alike, with the addition of a half pipe to Powderhorn, the Grand Mesa ski resort near Grand Junction, Colo. The new, 300 to 350 foot long half pipe will be located at the base of the mountain and visible from Powderhorn’s sun deck. The half pipe will also boast 13 foot high walls with a 16 to 17 percent grade.

Powderhorn has never had a half pipe during its 45-year existence.

“We are holding true to our promise of improving the guest experience,” Co-owner Andy Daly said. “The park snowboarders and skiers are critical for the experience we want to achieve at Powderhorn. We hope this will be one step toward a more friendly mountain for young customers. ”

Powderhorn early-bird season passes are available at the lowest price of the season – adult pass $399 - now through Oct. 14. Passes are available at www.powderhorn.com or by calling 970-268-5700.

Peak Color Time!

The colors of the Grand Mesa are putting on a full show now. The yellows and oranges of the aspens are just about blinding. Long-term event planning is always difficult when the event depends on nature. But it looks like this weekend should be near the peak of the color extravaganza.

One of our employees mysteriously disappeared this morning. These pictures got them busted...

Transition Accomplished!

You may have already seen it in the news, but we officially transitioned to new ownership this week. Andy Daly and the Gart brothers now have Powderhorn in their hands and they're ready to rock & roll.

Our biggest focus this year will be on your experience. From customer service to grooming to snowmaking, we will be working to improve it all. Plans and work to improve the snowmaking system are under way. Hopefully we'll have the cold temperatures we need (and early) to start cranking out the white stuff. As I've explained before, snowmaking is key to getting the mountain open early and in good condition. That rain last year.....well, let's just say "rain" is a terrible 4 letter word around here. Anyway, we're working with the Forest Service now to do all that is necessary to ramp up the system for this season.

We'll be hiring many positions soon, please stay tuned. We're looking for people who have great attitudes, enjoy making sure guests are having a good time and who love the mountain. As soon as all the information is together, we'll post it on our website.

In the meantime, come see us this weekend for Color Weekend lift rides, BBQ and fun!

New Park Features

The guys have been all over the mountain this summer and I think, come winter, you'll notice! New park features have been made from dead aspen to create The Rabbit Hole- a natural style park right after the Maverick jump line.

There's a little chill in the air this morning. Doesn't it feel great? New ski and snowboard magazines are also sitting on my desk. It can only mean one thing- ski season is just around the corner.

In just about 3 months, the lifts will begin turning here again and we'll welcome back all our PHriends. Our crews are hard at work preparing the mountain. There will be a lot of changes this year that you can feel, but may not necessarily see. Our new owners are working to improve the snowmaking system for this season. Increasing snowmaking output, even just on the lower 20 acres, will help the mountain open earlier and with a quality base. Let's just hope we get cold temperatures early this year (unlike last year).

Hello Powderhorn Folks,

The other day someone asked me, "Joe what do you do at a ski area in the summer?"

I had to stop and think; how can I make this a short answer? Anyone who knows me could tell you I can get a little long winded. So I came up with this.

We are like a giant working ranch/farm. Although our main product we sell is obviously in the winter, there is plenty of maintenance to do in the summer.

Just like any working ranching or farming operation there are folks on the "inside" keeping us in line, and folks on the "outside" literally working on the line. Lots of the things we do are routine for any area. Some are not. Nonetheless I get a little excited about how a mountain works, and this summer is no different from any other. The show must go on.

On the "Inside" some of the fine folks at Powderhorn have been working on collecting feedback from the community. This is a very important task considering we are here for the people of the Grand Valley. We also have year round bills that need to be paid, and documentation that needs to be filed. Sounds a little bit like work eh? Well it is, but its what makes the place chug forward.

On the "Outside" we have been focused on our normal maintenance required for any area. That includes having our rope and chair inspections done. Keeping up with our agreements for stewardship with the Forest Service. Even repainting some of the railings around the area. In addition to all this "routine" stuff, I have been using the dead aspen trees to create some new park features for everyone.

Everyone knows about our pending auction...trust us we know too.

...But rest assured we are constantly working to make sure Powderhorn is better every year!

To all our great snowriding friends,

I've been writing this blog since 2006 with the intent to connect with Powderhorn guests. My goal has been to communicate openly with you, show you the "behind the scenes" work, get you excited to ski/ride and, hopefully, make you chuckle once in awhile. You are the reason we get to work in the ski industry. You're the reason Powderhorn is here.

I love this place. Our terrain is unmatched in Colorado. I hated skiing trees when I first started working here; now it's all I want to ski! We really do have the best glades of any resort I've skied. This is also such an incredible place for families. It makes me happy to see Moms & Dads zipping their kids into ski gear (only to have them ask to use the restroom) and taking them out on the hill. Powderhorn is a great place to learn this lifetime sport.

Well, change is inevitable though. While it can be scary, it's certainly good. Today is my last day at this wonderful mountain. I've accepted some change in my own life. But I'm confident that Powderhorn will continue to be THE gem of Western Colorado. And I'll be the first in line to buy a 2011-12 season pass, because I can never get enough of those glades.

Thank you for being such loyal, supportive and FUN friends of Powderhorn. I'll see you on the slopes!

This new park is located off of Maverick, just below the jump park. The guys are clearing out dead aspen trees as part of our stewardship with the Forest Service. This has to be our best recycling program yet!

estate auction on August 4. The resort, which contains 600 groomed acres and 44
trails, will sell at absolute auction with no minimums and no reserves. J. P.
King, the nation's premier real estate auction marketing firm, will conduct the
sale.

"We're excited for what the future of Powderhorn can be, and
we know the potential that it has, so we're working with the leader in high-end
real estate auctions to ensure a quick and positive experience for us and for
the future owner," said Steve Bailey, the CEO and president of Powderhorn. "On
behalf of the current ownership and staff, we are looking forward to the
transition for this gem of western Colorado."

We're Back

After a restful and fun month off, we're all back at the mountain and planning full steam ahead for the 2011-12 season. We're all having a little trouble readjusting to getting up early again. I've noticed the coffee machine has been going nonstop these last couple days.

But, we had a great meeting today to discuss plans for some very exciting projects. Look for some really cool announcements coming soon!

It's that time of year for skiing in your favorite "throwback" or "gaper" gear, costumes, or anything fun really! Why do we do this as skiers and riders? Well we're fun people and warm mountain temperatures certainly encourage this behavior.

How to Spring Ski at Powderhorn

Sorry, I have some not-so-exciting news: only 12 days left in the season at Powderhorn. I don't mean to depress you, it just means we should all be getting in as many turns as possible these next 12 days!

With 14" in the last week, the mountain is refreshed and skiing very nicely. Here are some suggestions on how to take on the mountain for perfect spring runs:

Morning
Head to the West End where the sun shines first. If it's a powder day, this is definitely the place to be with a huge variety of options- the glades, Mudslide, Sweet Misery or Bear Claw to name a few.

Afternoon
The shift in lift hours allow for really fun skiing in the afternoons. If you like carving, the groomed runs have been perfect between 1-4pm each day. Bill's Run, Redeye and Tenderfoot are among a few that are groomed regularly and perfect for big turns.

The terrain parks are also softened up by then and great for all ability levels. Link them all together for top to bottom park fun with some carving and side jibs along the way.

Last Run
I recommend hitting Wonderbump on your final run if skiing until 5pm. It'll still have sun on it and the views are amazing.

The Terrain Park Crew and some of the Rental Shop crew were working hard today, digging the SnowBar out from under the new snow we have gotten, so we can party in there this weekend! Odell Brewing is sponsoring the SnowBar this weekend, Febraury 26. There will be drink specials, a bonfire, a dancefloor, and a DJ all inside this snow fort.
Before the party, is one of the funniest and most exciting events of the season, Dummy Jump! It's $10 to enter a Dummy, and free to watch, of course. The destruction begins at 5 pm, and judges are looking for the best themes, and biggest crashes!

Run: The snow has been so perfectly carvable lately, I've been laying in deep turns on Bill's Run.

Event: My buddies and I are getting ready for the Dummy Jump this Saturday. We have to start all over on our dummy though. We thought we could just use my cousin Earl...but then we read the rules.

Gear: The Alpine Trader is starting to have sales on several great brands. I went ahead and got myself a new scarf and some sunglasses. Gotta be ready for those spring days that are not too far away.

Food: I can't get enough of the chicken parmesan sandwiches at the Skiers Union Cafe!

Building a Death Trap

Construction of the Dummy Jump has begun! The guys have just started pushing the snow to build up the jump. The track and of course, the carnage-catcher will be coming soon. Take a peek at it if you're skiing this weekend.

If you're building a dummy, here are some helpful tips:

Give it some weight. Dummies need to be a little heavy to pick up the speed needed for a 20 foot jump and serious airtime.
Make sure it slides straight. If using skis, measure them at tip, middle and tail to make sure they're perfectly parallel.
Have fun with it! Get creative. Materials we've seen used in the past: bathtub, washing machine, wheelchair, keg, and a toilet. Just don't use hazardous materials or fireworks.

Behind the Scenes

Have you ever wondered what goes on at Powderhorn to make the place run? I know I used to think that a ski area pretty much just turned the lift on and said "Go for it!" Here's what really happens on a typical day...

The lifts close at 4pm every day. At this time, ski patrol does the final load on the lift for sweep. Patrols spread out across the mountain and ski every run slowly, stopping at checkpoints. They are looking for anyone that may not have made it off the mountain yet.

Next the groomers come out. These guys generally work shifts of 4pm to midnight and midnight to 8am. Each groomer has his list of runs to maintain that has been selected by Ski Patrol and Slope Maintenance. Groomers have great stories of things they've seen running around the mountain in the middle of the night (no sasquatch yet though). We also make snow during the night in the early season period.

Once everything has been groomed, the guys call in the report by 5am to a special voicemail box. Then, either myself or another snow reporter pulls ourselves out of bed around 5 or 5:30am to get their report and publish the snow report. Hopefully we sound perky and fool you into thinking we've been up for hours. Usually I've been up for 3 minutes and I'm in my PJs.

Our snow removal team is sometimes the first to arrive when it has been snowing. This crew is here at the crack of dark to plow everything. Our lift operations crew arrives at 7am and gets to their positions at the 3 lifts. Ski Patrol is also arriving at this time to start putting up the fences, slow signs, etc (this stuff is removed every night for the grooming). Food & Beverage is also showing up around this time to start cooking up a tasty breakfast, especially those killer cinnamon rolls.

Lift Operations crews perform safety and service checks on all lifts and then makes a radio call to our mountain dispatcher when each lift is ready for the public. The terrain park crew prepares and opens each park. In the meantime, ticket office has opened the windows and ski school is in their morning meeting. By 8:30 the rental shop is getting tons of skis and snowboards adjusted to each individual foot. When the clock strikes 9, we start loading and the day has begun. At 10:30am the first batch of lessons begin and instructors take their groups to the different teaching areas on the mountain.

All day long we're communicating on the radios between departments trying to make everything run smooth. At about 3:30 the terrain parks close and each feature gets maintenance and raking. When 4pm comes around again, the lifts get "toned out." This is a tone that is broadcast to all our radios with an announcement that all lifts are officially closed. Then, the whole process begins again!

The 2nd Annual Dummy Jump is just a couple weeks away, February 26th to be exact. So it's time to start brainstorming and building! Those of you that witnessed the spectacle last year saw a variety of "dummies' launched off our huge jump- a washing machine, bathtub, go kart and even Richard Nixon.

It's just $10 to enter a dummy. There will be prizes based on creativity and biggest/most spectacular/epic crash. Grab your buddies and start the plan.

Powder Cats Race Day!

The grand finale of the 2010-2011 Powder Cats program was a downhill race through The Magic Forest with some unconventional gates and obstacles!

15 racers were cheered on by their team mates, family and coaches all the way to the balloon arch finish line!

And the winners of this timed event were....

They celebrated after the race with juice and cookies, and were awarded certificates and goodie bags for their achievements this season! The Powder Cats will meet for two more fun days on the mountain to show off the skills they have learned in their lessons!

The Powder Cats program is designed for children 4-8 with an emphasis on safety, fun, skill improvement and exploring the mountain. All Powder Cats must exhibit the ability to stop before the first lesson, and they keep learning from there!

Maverick shook the snow out of his antlers and stopped in with this week's picks:

Run: With 16" in the last 48 hours, everything is good. Powder pockets can still be found in the trees. Head for your personal stash!

Event: It's a competition weekend. This Saturday is both the CDA Ski Challenge and the 3 Jump Jackpot. Speed or air? Take your pick. Perhaps a little of both? Get those adrenaline juices flowing.

Gear: Hand warmers! They're a quick purchase and save your hooves. Buy these little packets of fire at the Alpine Trader or Guest Services.

Food: There are a variety of hot soups each day at the Sunset Grille. I've gone through 6 bowls already this week. I'm taking the self-proclaimed Tour de Soup.

Hit the Jumps — Hit the Jackpot! This Saturday...

Love to get big air? Got some good moves up there? Strut your stuff at the 3 Jump Jackpot this Saturday February 5, and you could win yourself some sweet prizes [from Dakine!], and maybe more importantly — bragging rights. The competition will be held in the Maverick Terrain Park where, you guessed it, there will be three big jumps. The 2 biggest jumps are ready and thanks to the big ol' storm we just got, we've got the white stuff piled up to build the 3rd jump this week.

The competition is open to skiers and riders, guys and gals, pros and amatuers, of all ages. It's free to spectators, $15 to enter. Competitors must have a helmet and sign a release. Those under 18 need a signature from their parent or guardian to compete. Registration is at Noon, Jackpot starts at 1:00 pm. Don't forget your lucky charms.... and your game face, this is one jackpot that isn't ALL about luck.

Park Update

Here's an update on our terrain parks, straight from The Pope...

As of today, January 26, 2011, we have three park areas open with a total of 20 features.

You may have noticed that we were able to build our first and second jump in Maverick park. We will be adding more features to Maverick, and all the parks as time and snow permits. We are really looking forward to the Three Jump Jackpot coming up in the beginning of February. The “Three Jump” is our premiere slopestyle park competition held in Maverick.

We have lots of other plans for the park system this year at Powderhorn. We hope that you, our guests, will continue to enjoy the features. We certainly enjoy building, and enjoy riding them ourselves.

Our focus for the next two weeks before the Three Jump Jackpot is to try and finish Maverick. We really need mother nature’s help on this one. We have pushed all the snow we have on Maverick to get our first two jumps…However we need a third…Otherwise it won’t quite be a “three jump” jackpot.

We are also planning on adding a wall ride and a quarter pipe somewhere in the upcoming weeks.

We are really excited about our new coats this year. Ride Snowboards really came through for us, and we are stoked. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to stop and talk with one of the park rangers. We are the guys in the peacock colored coats. We would love to chat it up with ya!!!

If you've seen a very wild moose lately grinning from antler to antler, that's our Maverick. He's been getting more ski days than all of us...and loving every minute. Here are his picks for the week:

Run: Top Cut terrain park to Equalizer. I've been practicing my jibs on the new natural features then bombing down the Equalizer face.

Gear: My new Smith helmet from the Alpine Trader has been tested...from the above mentioned activities. They just got in a new shipment!

Food: Any of the burgers at the Skiers Union Cafe are incredible! No wonder they've been featured on Oprah as one of the best burgers in the U.S.

Apres: The Sunset Bar has been hoping with frequent live music and drink specials. Margarita Mondays are always a good cure for a case of the Mondays.

Deal: The Inn at Wildewood has a Midweek Getaway Special right now. Just $89 Monday-Thursdays AND you get 2 half-price lift tickets for the next day. Only valid through the end of the month so get your reservation. Affordable ski break with no lift lines! I have my room blocked out for several days. Uphill/Downhill Race

As part of the TeleFest, the uphill/downhill race took place this morning on Wonderbump. Competitors had to run to their skis, put skins on, skin all the way up Wonderbump, rip the skins of and ski down.

They completed this in the amount of time it takes me to put my boots on.

Behold the beauty that is Snow Bar, snow lovers! You can thank our awesome Terrain Park Crew for creating the venue for an epic aprés ski party—a gigantic snow fort! The crew was up until midnight smoothing out the dance floor, building walls, and carving out the top shelf for the bar. And they were back at it bright and early this morning. "We're working hard so we can play hard Saturday night," said Jerrick (above) of the Terrain Park Crew. Jerrick, also known as "J-Rock" will be knockin' some socks off with his DJ dexterity the night of the big bash too! You don't wanna miss this! Party starts at 4 p.m. January 22.
